Consultancy & collaboration

The EHS team offer a range of consultancy services and collaboration opportunities as part of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service. Some examples of consultancy projects and collaborations with industrial and academic partners are listed below.

For more information about working with the EHS team, please contact Dr Mark Fletcher at: [email protected]
Human testing for hearing, vibration, and balance

As part of the Institute of sound and Vibration Research, we specialise in human testing to validate and inform the development of new audio and haptic software and hardware. Dr Mark Fletcher, who leads the EHS team, has been working at the cutting edge of human testing of hearing and vibration for more than a decade.

In addition to being able to call on a large student population for testing, we are affiliated with the
University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service and have close links to a number of hospitals. This means we have access to a range of clinical populations.

Sound and vibration system calibration, testing, and development

We offer a range of services for calibrating sound and vibration systems.

For example, we regularly calibrate clinical audiology systems in the
University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service and recently completed a project for a leading car manufacturer, in which we built a corpus of audio recordings for use with in-car voice recognition systems.

We are also involved in a number of projects calibrating and developing haptic devices for a range of applications.

App development

We have developed a range of apps for clinical audiological testing (which are currently being used in UK clinics), auditory training, and acoustics.

One example is an app we are currently developing for a leading hearing aid company for demonstrating different hearing aid algorithms using our virtual acoustics techniques.

Another example is the RealSpeech auditory training app (see images), which is designed to help people improve their ability to understand speech in noisy places.  Realspeech
surpasses existing auditory training software by recreating natural listening environments with an unparalleled level of realism. State-of-the-art binaural sound recordings are combined with high-definition video footage to create an accurate and immersive perceptual experience.

AI for noise reduction, system optimization, and big data

We use the latest AI/ machine-learning technology to optimize acoustic and vibration systems, to extract signals from background noise, and to process and extract information from big data. This work is aided by our access to the Iridis Compute Cluster at the University of Southampton, which is one of the most powerful computer systems on the plant.

Our world-leading facilities

At the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, we have a world-leading range of facilities for acoustic and vibration testing. These include:
  • Anechoic and reverberation chambers
  • A range of advance acoustic and vibration measurement systems (including Kemar head and torso simulator and Eigen microphones)
  • Cutting-edge virtual reality systems
  • A  large six-axis shaker (see image) for balance and vibration testing
  • A hearing and balance force plate system
  • One of the most powerful super computers in the world
  • Cutting-edge 3D printing and micro electronics laboratories
