RealSpeech
Available soon on the Microsoft Store
RealSpeech is an auditory training app that is used in conjunction with the electro-haptics project, but is also available for personal use. It is designed to help people improve their ability to understand speech in noisy places. RealSpeech allows users to practise listening in a range of everyday environments, such as a busy cafe, a car, or an open-plan office. It quickly adapts to suit any level of hearing ability, but is especially designed to help people with hearing aids or cochlear implants who are finding it hard to hear in background noise or who are getting used to a new device.
RealSpeech allows you to select from a library of talkers speaking on a variety of general-interest topics. Each talker can be placed into any of the 20+ scenes available, which cover a wide variety of everyday indoor and outdoor environments. RealSpeech surpasses existing auditory training software by recreating natural listening environments with an unparalleled level of realism. State-of-the-art binaural sound recordings are combined with high-definition video footage to create an accurate and immersive perceptual experience. RealSpeech additionally benefits from the incorporation of varied and meaningful speech material within a simple and intuitive task, a clean and modern user interface, and a framework for providing feedback tailored to the individual.
RealSpeech is used in research. It has been used for training in the electro-haptics research project to improve speech-in-noise performance of cochlear implant patients (Fletcher et al., 2018; Fletcher et al., 2019) and has also been used in brain-imaging studies to understand how we adapt to challenging everyday listening situations (Rowland et al., 2018).
RealSpeech will be available soon through the Microsoft Store. Please note that RealSpeech is currently only available for Windows 10.
